Embracing Creativity and Balance–A New Year’s Guide for Parents
February 25, 2024
As the New Year unfolds, it’s the perfect time to guide our children into establishing new routines while nurturing their creativity, however they decide to express it. After a holiday break filled with festivities, relaxation and let’s be honest, some chaos; transitioning back into a structured routine may seem challenging for both parents and kids. However, finding the right balance between structure and what I like to call “white space” allows for an “ease in” approach to the New Year. Here are some helpful hints…
Start with a Positive Mindset
Encourage a positive approach by discussing the excitement of new beginnings. Acknowledge any concerns your child may have about returning to a routine, and brainstorm together the possibilities a New Year brings.
Establish Consistent Routines
While structure is essential, it’s equally important not to over-schedule. Allow for daily routines that include dedicated times for meals, sleep, and homework, but also leaving space for free time. Consistent routine helps children feel secure and a bit of free time gives them agency over the choices they make.
Foster Creativity with Dedicated “white space”
Designate specific periods of unstructured time as “white space” in your child’s schedule. This is the time for them to explore their creativity, whether it’s through art, imaginative play, sport or pursuing a hobby they love. Unstructured time encourages independent thinking, problem-solving, and innovation. I know this seems impossible with the number of activities our kids partake in, so, take stock of what your kids are involved in, prioritize activities ruthlessly, and know it’s okay that some get cut from the list—guilt free!
Quality Family Time
In the hustle of everyday life, make it a point to allocate quality time for family activities. Whether it’s a game night, a movie marathon, or simply sharing stories. I love to encourage family time outside, whether your jam is hiking, skiing or just a casual walk, the outdoors renews mind and body! Family moments strengthen familial bonds and provide a sense of security for your child.
So, what’s your family thing?
For us parents, the key is to strike the right balance between structure and creativity, routine and flexibility. By embracing the New Year with a positive mindset, involving your child in decision-making, and allowing for “white space,” you create an environment where they can flourish into who they really are, not who we want them to be. And remember, if you feel that “white space” is going to bore your child, know that boredom is a catalyst to creativity. Give it a chance!
